English
Purposeful talk and careful listening are encouraged at all stages. A broad and balanced approach is used in teaching of reading and writing to ensure that every child has the best chance of succeeding. We not only want the children to be effective readers but also to embark on a lifelong love of literature.
The school follows the National Literacy Strategy - a copy of this is available at the school for your information.
Mathematics
Our aim is to ensure that children have a confident positive attitude towards mathematics. The children are taught mainly in ability groups but we also teach the whole class together or individually where this is appropriate.
From Year R to Year 4 the timetable includes daily Numeracy lessons within the framework of the National Numeracy Strategy
Emphasis is put upon ensuring that mathematical activities are purposeful and can be related to real life problem solving situations. The school is keen to help the children develop and share effective mental strategies to solve problems.
Science
The children are encouraged to develop an enquiring attitude to the world around them and participate in a variety of science investigations. We expect them to become increasingly logical and systematic in the way they work. We encourage them to think about the effect we have on the environment by our actions.
Information/Communication Technology
We aim to teach the children to use I.T. equipment confidently and purposefully to support and develop their work in many areas of the curriculum. We are fortunate to have an interactive whiteboard and computer in each classroom and a set of 15 laptops on a mobile trolley, which are used by all classes.
We have recently upgraded our resources to include CD Roms with a good selection of software and a digital camera giving the children experience in handling and accessing information.
The school is connected to the Internet via the Suffolk Learning and Management Network.
As part of the school's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) programme we offer pupils supervised access to the Internet. Access to the Internet will enable pupils to explore libraries, databases and bulletin boards and occasionally exchange messages with other Internet users throughout the world.
Children will have controlled access to the Internet only via Suffolk L.A's Intranet, which provides suitable and appropriate material.
Rules and guidelines for pupils' use of the Internet will be drawn up for each class.
Any parents who may have queries about their child's use of the Internet are welcome to discuss these with the class teacher.
Religious Education
R.E. is taught using an agreed syllabus approved by the Diocesan Board of Education and the L.A. The children are encouraged to develop their own spiritual and moral values and to respect the customs and beliefs of others. We have strong links with the local churches as described in the section on our aims and ethos.
Parents may, if they wish, withdraw their children from Religious Education or Assemblies, but we would ask you to inform the Headteacher in writing at the time your child is admitted. Children would be offered alternative, appropriate activities.
