Special Educational Needs

At Rougham our assessments help us to identify problems as early as possible and monitor children's progress. This allows us to decide upon the kind of support needed by individual children. Often children are supported within the classroom by their teacher. Occasionally children may need to work on a specific learning programme with an ancillary helper or special needs co-ordinator in a small group or even individually. We have a series of specific learning programmes in place for reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, speaking and listening, and maths. We also have a system of written records (called Records of Support) where we identify a child's area of difficulty, the programme of work to be followed, the support given and the targets to be met.

Where problems persist we work co-operatively with outside agencies in order to seek solutions. These include Advisory Teachers for Learning Support, the Educational Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist, and staff from the Child Development Centre. We cater for children of all levels of ability including the very able, and aim to ensure they are appropriately supported and challenged. We have a Special Needs Policy document which can be borrowed from the school office.
